What is FromThePage?

FromThePage is software that allows volunteers to transcribe handwritten documents online.

The FromThePage software is still under development, but we'd like to invite people to look around and send suggestions and bug reports to benwbrum@gmail.com. If anything looks broken, hard to understand, or just odd, please let us know! For a behind-the-scenes look at the development effort, check out the product development blog.

Transcribe Manuscripts

To help, or just to try out the FromThePage software, you'll need to create an account. Then select a work from one of our collections, like this one, and click the transcribe tab on any page.

To our volunteers:

Thank you for helping us transcribe the Journals and Diaries of William Brewster. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. The transcription of these works is an ongoing effort that currently supports the Purposeful Gaming and BHL project. This transcription site also serves as a pilot project to help us develop a permanent means of transcribing the expanding manuscript content of the Biodiversity Heritage Library. Your continued efforts are invaluable as we strive to unlock the wealth of biodiversity data contained within these documents.

To coincide with the BHL Garden Stories social media campaign (March 23-27, 2015), we are adding a Historical Seed & Nursery Catalog collection, containing a selection of catalogs for transcription. Like manuscripts, horticultural catalogs present a challenge to computerized Optical Character Recognition, making them prime candidates for crowdsourced human transcription. This collection will be available on Monday, March 23, 2015. Transcription of the seed & nursery catalogs is also part of the Purposeful Gaming project. We welcome your assistance. Thank you!
